IMLS Invests in Community-Based Archives Sustainability

BOSTON, MA (JULY 27, 2022) - The History Project (THP), Boston's LGBTQ+ community archives, in collaboration with the South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA), Texas After Violence Project, and La Historia Historical Society, has been awarded a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

"Sustainable Earned Revenue Strategies for Community-Based Archives," is a three-year project led by SAADA to develop, evaluate, and share replicable earned revenue strategies to strengthen the financial sustainability of community based archives and small to medium-sized cultural institutions.

"As the leader of a community-based archives, I believe that this work will generate a tremendous impact on our field," said Joan Ilacqua, Executive Director of The History Project, "Community archives are driven by our mission to tell stories by, for, and with the communities we serve. It is essential that we generate income in ways that are aligned with our objectives and obligations. By working together and sharing our successes and setbacks, this study will help small but impactful community-based organizations pursue business strategies to become more sustainable."
