Boston Deejay Project

Documenting Boston's LGBTQ club scene

The History Project is collecting oral histories with deejays from LGBTQ clubs in the Boston area, past and present. These interviews reveal many layers of Boston’s LGBTQ history and the changes in our community over the years: gay bars’ openings and closings, locations, atmospheres, and declining numbers; music; the effects of AIDS; drug use; the many people and personalities who were part of the scene; and, of course, what it was like to come out and live in LGBTQ Boston through the past five decades.

The full interviews are available in the History Project Archives and selections from interviews are available on YouTube. Interview subjects thus far are: Bobby Busnach, Steven Burke, Conrado Cardenas, Val Bernasconi, Maryalice Kalaghan, Brent Covington, Paul Egan, Brian Halligan, and Caril Mitro. If you are or were a DJ in Boston’s LGBTQ clubs – at any point in time – and would like to sit down with The History Project, please email Tony Grima at info@historyproject.org.
