Honey, Let's Get Married: A Community-Generated History of Marriage Equality

Honey, Let's Get Married!

Building a Community-Generated History of Marriage Equality

While the legal perspective is crucial to understanding marriage equality as a whole, countless personal stories of LGBTQ+ love and joy from the past 20 years have not been documented.

To address this historical gap, The History Project is launching Honey, Let’s Get Married!, a digital collecting initiative that enables community members to submit their own wedding stories, photographs, invitations, vows, and other materials.

Submissions will be preserved and shared in The History Project’s digital archives for future generations.

INSTRUCTIONS
Before you upload and describe your photographs, documents, recordings, and other items using the online submission form, please review the following guidelines.

Instructions for Scanning or Photographing Your Contribution
If you are submitting an item that is already available digitally, please plan to upload the file directly to the submission form.

If you would like to contribute a photograph or document that you only have available as a physical item, here are short instructions for either scanning that physical item or taking a digital photograph of that item.

Do you have access to a scanner?

  • If you have access to a scanner, we recommend scanning your contribution at 600 dpi/ppi, and saving the file as a JPG or TIF file.
  • If you don't have access to a scanner, we recommend taking a photograph of the item with a digital camera or smartphone and submitting that through the online form. When photographing the physical item, try to minimize glare from lights, windows, or flash from your camera.

Image Files to Upload
Please upload high-resolution image files if possible. Please don’t edit, correct, crop, or enhance images prior to upload.

Submitting multiple items
If you have multiple items that you would like to contribute to this collection, you will need to upload and describe them separately. After you have submitted a single item, you will see an option to return to the submission form and to contribute additional items.

Go to the Submission Form.
