On Sunday, November 20th, we heard the news of the tragic and deadly shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs. We are devastated by this shooting and our hearts are with our queer family in Colorado Springs.
This violence took place hours before the annual observation of Trans Day of Remembrance, a day where we honor and recognize the lives lost annually to anti-transgender violence.
This attack is the result of escalating calls for violence against LGBTQ+ people; it is the result of efforts to censor LGBTQ+ activities as being inappropriate for children; it is the result of the backlash against the fight for equality for all - which includes LGBTQ+ rights and freedom from gun violence.
This week, we mourn the loss of life in Colorado Springs as we mourn the many lost to anti-transgender violence. We will continue our work to ensure that LGBTQ+ stories are preserved and shared and that our struggles and celebrations are not forgotten.
Signed,
Joan Ilacqua, Executive Director, on behalf of The History Project's staff
Andrew Elder, Board Chair, on behalf of The History Project's Board of Directors
