The History Project seeks to grow the Board of Directors in 2024.

The History Project is… an independent non-profit organization founded in 1980 that holds LGBTQ+ historical records and ephemera, supports LGBTQ+ history research, and shares LGBTQ+ history through public exhibits and events. We honor queer joy, support the ongoing fight for liberation, and preserve our past and present to inspire the future. Learn more about our work at historyproject.org.

We are committed to having a Board of Directors that represents our local LGBTQ+ community and gives voice to a wide range of perspectives, backgrounds, and abilities. We are looking for candidates for our Board who are passionate about the power of queer history.

Our Board supports THP’s staff and volunteers in achieving our vision of a sustainably funded organization that functions as a community space for research, education, and connection. Board members are vital volunteers who serve as advocates and ambassadors. Board members create partnerships, plan events, support archival acquisitions, raise funds, and ensure our work aligns with the ongoing fight for queer and trans liberation. Previous service on a board is not required.

Board Tenure and Terms

New board members are voted in by a majority of current members for three-year terms. After a year-long introduction for new Board members to explore the responsibilities and opportunities of Board service, they can take on leadership roles as Treasurer, Clerk, or Chair.

Board Member Responsibilities

  • Legal: We are a nonprofit and the Board is responsible for the legal duty of care, duty of loyalty, and duty of obedience.
  • Attendance & Service:  Board members join our Board meetings every third Wednesday of the month at 6 PM. Most meetings are virtual, we intend to hold four in-person meetings in 2024. Board members also participate in a committee (Events & Outreach, Development, Organization, or Archives & Research) which meets once or twice per month.
  • Development: Board members contribute financially each year, making a meaningful personal donation. We recognize that contributions extend beyond finances, and we don't set a specific financial requirement for board participation. Board members also support fundraising through connections to personal and professional networks, advocacy, and community engagement.
